Introduction

 

This Module is designed to help educators teach on various aspects of the illegal exploitation of wild flora (wild timber and non-timber species). The module touches upon the underlying characteristics of illegal exploitation of wild flora, the drivers and how it occurs, as well as the consequences for the environment, economy and society. Furthermore, this module provides content on criminal justice responses to illegal exploitation of wild flora, including crime prevention.

 

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the concept and global scope of the illegal exploitation of wild flora, and describe how “plant blindness” represents an obstacle to understanding this crime and how to prevent it
  • List and describe the different reasons why wild flora is illegally harvested
  • Identify the steps in the supply chain of the illegal exploitation of wild flora, along with the actors involved in each step
  • Discuss the role of corruption and organized crime groups in the illegal exploitation of wild flora
  • Examine the differences in the illegal exploitation of timber and non-timber flora
  • Categorize and describe the consequences of illegal harvesting of wild flora
  • Identify flora-specific international regulations, and describe a variety of monitoring and prevention strategies
