Possible class structure

 

The following is a recommended structure for the class. Students should complete the required readings before coming to class. The lecture is meant to reinforce what they learned in the readings and the exercises are designed to apply what they learned in the readings and the lecture. The following breakdown is designed for a three-hour class. Lecturers can adapt the structure based on their needs and class times.

Introduction and learning outcomes

Lecture  (10 minutes):

  • Provide a brief introduction to the class and its contents
  • Identify and discuss the learning outcomes of the class
 

Privacy: What it is and why it is important

Lecture  (15 minutes):

  • Discuss privacy and its importance as a human right
 

Privacy and security

Lecture  (15 minutes):

  • Identify and critically assess the relationship between security and privacy

[ Optional:  Have students complete "Homework # 1: Security, Privacy, or Both" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture. Students can either hand in a one- to three-page summary of their findings or come prepared to discuss their findings in class]

Class Exercise Discussion (20 minutes):

[ Optional:  Have students complete "Exercise # 4: Privacy Enhancing Tools" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture. Students can either hand in a one- to three-page summary of their findings or come prepared to discuss their findings in class].

 

Cybercrime that compromises privacy

Lecture (20 minutes):

  • Identify and analyse the impact of cybercrime on privacy

Class Exercise Discussion (20 minutes):

Use the questions under "Exercise # 1: IoT Toys" to facilitate discussion on the topic. [*Reminder: Students need to review the links and videos to prepare for this exercise before coming to class].

Time:  10 minutes

 

Data protection legislation and data breach notification laws

Lecture (30 minutes):

  • Survey and evaluate specific data protection and data breach notification laws

[ Optional:  Have students complete "Homework # 2: Regional Data Protection Laws: An Evaluation" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture. Students can either hand in a one- to three-page summary of their findings or merely come prepared to discuss their findings in class].

Class Group Exercise Discussion (20 minutes):
