E4J Grants Programmes

Academia and universities (and other higher education institutions) have a crucial role to play in today’s rapidly changing global system, which is increasingly driven by knowledge, information, innovation and ideas. However, as noted by several higher education leaders, it would be short- sighted to limit the scope of higher education’s role to being important only for economic development and a source for innovative ideas to resolve today’s problems. Instead, higher education institutions need to be supported and recognized as places where the next generation will be empowered to become the leaders that are needed for tomorrow. Equally important to prosperity and innovation are leaders who understand the rule of law, good governance, and how organized crime, terrorism and corruption can be countered effectively.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) acknowledges this important role and aims to strengthen cooperation with academia, educators and higher education institutions. The work of UNODC’s Education for Justice (E4J) initiative focuses on strengthening academia’s voice and role with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes activities such as:

Acknowledging the important role academia has in fostering sustainable development, E4J goes one step further and actively supports i) higher education institutions that want to become hubs for rule of law & SDG 16 teaching as well as ii) young scholars who do research on topics related to SDG 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions.

How? Through our innovative grants programmes for higher education institutions and young researchers.
