Possible class structure

 

The following is a recommended structure for the class. Students should complete the required readings before coming to class. The lecture is meant to reinforce what they learned in the readings and the exercises are designed to apply what they learned in the readings and the lecture. The following breakdown is designed for a three-hour class. Lecturers can adapt the structure based on their needs and class times.

Introduction and learning outcomes

Lecture  (10 minutes):

  • Provide a brief introduction to the class and its contents
  • Identify and discuss the learning outcomes of the class
 

Intellectual property: What it is

Lecture  (20 minutes):

  • Discuss intellectual property and the importance of its protection

[ Optional: Have students complete "Exercise #4 - Intellectual Property Rights Debate" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture].

[ Optional: Have students complete "Homework #3: Evolution of Cyber-Enabled Intellectual Property Crime" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture].

 

Types of intellectual property

Lecture  (30 minutes):

  • Discuss and differentiate between different forms of intellectual property
  • Discuss and critically evaluate national, regional and international laws and treaties relating to intellectual property protection

Class exercise  (20 minutes):

Have students complete "Exercise #3 - Learning from Literature and TV: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture.

 

Break

Time: 10 minutes

 

Causes, reasons and perceived justifications for cyber-enabled copyright and trademark offences

Lecture  (30 minutes):

  • Identify and discuss various theories and critically assess their applicability to cyber-enabled copyright and trademark offences

Use the questions in "Homework #1: Other Theories" to facilitate a discussion on the topic. [*Reminder: This exercise needs to be completed before class].

Class exercise  (20 minutes):

Ask students to complete "Exercise #1 - The Case of Megaupload" and discuss their findings in class. [*Reminder: This exercise needs to be completed before class].

 

Protection and prevention efforts

Lecture  (20 minutes):

  • Identify, discuss, and evaluate national, regional and international intellectual property protection and prevention efforts.

[ Optional: Have students complete "Exercise #2 - Innovative Technological Solutions to Intellectual Property Theft" before class and have them discuss their findings during the lecture. Students can either hand in a one- to three-page summary of their findings or merely come prepared to discuss their findings in class].

Case Study Discussion  (20 minutes):

Use the questions in "Homework #2: Group Exercise ~ Intellectual Property: Laws, Theories, and Practice" to facilitate discussion on the topic and discuss their findings in class. [*Reminder: This exercise needs to be completed before class.
