Student assessment


This section provides suggestions for post-class assignments for the purpose of assessing student understanding of the Module. Suggestions for pre-class or in-class assignments are provided in the Exercises section.

Post-class assignment: Wildlife trafficking before the courts

This exercise serves to familiarize students with the prosecution and judicial process for wildlife and forest offences and the evidence and procedural rules applicable to such proceedings. Further, the exercise is designed to promote UNODC's SHERLOC case database and encourage greater use of the resources made available through this portal. It also encourages students to research cases beyond the SHERLOC material.


Choose any of the following wildlife trafficking related cases from UNODC's SHERLOC case database.

Using the official case report along with secondary sources and news media, in a written paper, examine the following points:

  • In no more than 250 words, summarize the facts of the case.
  • Summarize the information about how the case came to light and the ensuing investigation.
  • Outline the first trial proceedings, including, where available, information about the evidence used against the defendants.
  • Where applicable, summarize the appeal proceedings.
  • Has the case been discussed in other official reports, scholarly articles, or news reports? If it has, use any relevant information for points (1) to (4).
